The International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized organization of the United Nations, is in charge of ensuring the safety and security of shipping as well as preventing ship-related air and marine pollution. The UN Sustainable Development Goals are supported by IMO's activity since 1948. It is the collective duty of all nations to improve security in international waterways.  As the world's economy depends heavily on marine trade and transportation, maintaining maritime security is essential to long-term economic viability.
